SOCIAL SECURITY: Association's Lobbying Efforts PDF Print E-mail

JANUARY 1999 - Our Association has joined forces with others to maximize lobbying efforts on social security issues. Currently we belong to two national coalitions.

They are:

COALITION TO ASSURE RETIREMENT EQUITY (CARE).
CARE’s focus is legislative relief from the Government Pension Offset (GPO) and the Windfall Laws. Lobbying is coordinated by and through the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE).

COALITION TO PRESERVE RETIREMENT SECURITY (CPRS).
Our Association belongs to The Mass Coalition to Preserve Retirement Security, the state arm of the national lobbying effort by The Coalition to Preserve Retirement Security. Its focus is the defeat of mandatory social security for new employees of state and local governments.

As the 106th Congress begins work in January, social security reform will be emphasizing revenue-enhancing issues, like mandatory coverage and not the GPO and the Windfall. In light of these political realities, our Association’s legislative team is directing their efforts now to defeat mandatory social security, mindful that the GPO and Windfall issues must be addressed more aggressively at some later date.
