MAY 2004
- Senate President Makes Key Change - By now our members are well aware that out of all the important
legislative committees busy at work within the State House, it is the
Joint Committee on Public Service that remains vital to public retirees.
For this reason, the Association takes particular interest not only in the membership of Public Service, but most importantly who will be named to chair the Committee. Over the years it has been through our efforts in working closely with the Chairmen that we have accomplished so much for public retirees. In mid-March, Senate President Robert Travaglini named three-term State Senator Steven Tolman to chair the Public Service Committee. Tolman replaces longtime Senator David Magnani, who has been assigned to chair the Steering and Policy Committee. Magnani, 59, a 20-year legislator, is not running for reelection this year. Prior to being elected to the Senate, Tolman served two terms in the House. He was elected to the Senate in 1998, to fill the seat being vacated by his younger brother Warren, who had run for Lt. Governor that year. A Watertown native, Steve Tolman now lives in Brighton with his wife and three children. Prior to holding elective office, Tolman worked for the railroad for over twenty years. In addition, he will continue to serve as the assistant vice-chairman of the Senate Committee on Ways and Means. "This is an important appointment to public retirees and Steve Tolman is certainly up to the task. He has a solid reputation as a hands-on fighter for working people," said Association President Ralph White. "After having been vice-chairman of the Committee for the past few years, Steve is more than up to the task ahead. We look forward to working closely with him and his staff over the coming months." Tolman's key staffer on the Committee will be Will Luzier, Jr., who is a respected State House veteran. They will join House Chairman Bob Koczera and his topnotch staff in formulating new public pension and health insurance laws. |
