MAY 2003 - Torch Passed From Angelo Amato - Bob Cawley of West Roxbury has won a three-year term as an elected member on the State Retirement Board. The seat Cawley takes over had been held by Angelo Amato for thirty-three years. Ralph White holds the other elected seat.

“Both men are active members of our Association and the torch has been passed from Angelo to Bob,” said White. “Bob has already served three years as an appointed member of the Board, so there will be no learning curve on his part.

“Angelo was born two streets from me in East Boston. He’s been a fighter for employees and retirees all of his life, both as a union leader and Board member. In the forty years I’ve worked with him on the Hill, I’ve never met a more dedicated person.”

Cawley is a retired Director of Senate Personnel. He had earlier served as a state representative, followed by three terms in the Senate, representing the 5th Suffolk District.

In winning, Cawley received 5,384 votes, easily topping a field of eleven. Carol Parad Kurzman of Housing and Community Development was second with 3,792 votes, while Michael Roche, a State Police retiree, placed third with 3,244 votes. State Treasurer Tim Cahill is the chairman of the five-member State Board. In addition to Cahill, White and Cawley, two open seats will shortly be filled. The first will be appointed by Cahill and the second will be voted by the Board members.
