JULY 2001 - Popular Framingham Rep Friend of Retirees - Veteran Framingham Representative John Stefanini has resigned his House seat to become the top aide to House Speaker Thomas Finneran. Stefanini, who was serving his fifth term in the House, is now chief counsel and advisor to the powerful Speaker.First elected to the House from his native Framingham in 1990, Stefanini served as a member of the committees on Ways and Means, Post Audit and Oversight, and Local Affairs. He previously served as vice chairman of the Health Care Committee.

“Throughout his career in the Legislature, John has always been considered a friend to retirees. He stood with us in May 1997 for the historic COLA vote, which was a litmus test of this Association,” said Association President Ralph White. “John has good political instincts and core values, which will serve the Speaker well. Most important to our members is that John understands and is interested in retirement issues.”

Finneran asked Stefanini to join his staff after the departure of long-time aide and confidant Bill Kennedy. A part-time professor at Suffolk University Law School, Kennedy decided to leave the State House to pursue a private legal career. He was viewed as Finneran’s right hand man, is highly respected, and his presence in the State House will be missed.

“Bill Kennedy had been with Tom Finneran for many years and the House leadership team relied upon him as a sounding board. John Stefanini has some big shoes to fill, but I am certain he is up to the job,” added White.

Since Stefanini will not serve out the remainder of his term, a special election will be held later this year to fill the now open seat. The 7th Middlesex District currently encompasses the town of Ashland and Framingham precincts 8, 11-12, and 14-17.
