MARCH 1998 -
CONTINUE TO SHOW STRONG EARNINGS GAIN - Assets
of the nation’s 50 largest public pension systems have continued to
grow at a staggering rate. In the year ending last September 30, the
funds’ value climbed by 20.6% over the previous year.
California,
with a monster fund of $127,656 billion, again led the way in total
assets, followed by the New York State fund with Assets of 95,812
billion. Massachusetts’ combined state and teachers fund, known as the
Pension Reserves Investment Trust (PRIT) Fund, grew to $22,654 billion,
the twenty-fourth largest public fund in the country.
Up
until 12 months ago, Massachusetts retirement system was on a
pay-as-you-go basis and was ranked 35th among all systems. Since that
time, an aggressive funding schedule has pushed our state’s fund
steadily upward.
