UPDATE: MANDATORY MEDICARE
JAN 2007 - Duxbury Awaits Weston Decision - Earlier this year, we reported that Duxbury officials postponed a vote on mandatory Medicare (Section 18) until this fall. If Section 18 is accepted by a town, then its retirees and survivors, who are Medicare eligible, will be forced to enroll in Parts A and B and a supplement plan provided by it.

TOUGH INSURANCE CHOICE FOR SPRINGFIELD RETIREES

JAN 2007 - Several Options As They Switch To State Plan - City of Springfield retirees went to church on October 31. And no, it wasn’t a Halloween Party, nor was it a church service. It was a Baptist Church, the “Church in the Acres,” where the City’s Personnel Director, Marilyn Montagna, addressed a standing-room-only crowd of retirees on the upcoming change in retirees’ health insurance.

Springfield To Join GIC
ImageNOV 2006 - Retirees Win Concessions - The City of Springfield is about to take an important step in the battle to control its healthcare costs, that could mark the beginning of a statewide movement.As of January 1, over 8,500 Springfield retirees, survivors, active employees and their dependents will join the state-run Group Insurance Commission. In doing so, the Commonwealth’s third largest city will become the first municipality to enroll in the state’s health insurance plans.

GIC Retiree Vision Plan Now In Its Sixth Year
NOV 2006 - Insurers Bid On State’s Retiree Dental Plan - Over five years ago, the state’s Group Insurance Commission (GIC) embarked upon a vision program for its retirees and their families. “Now in its sixth year, the GIC’s Retiree Vision Plan offers something a bit different from one’s usual insurance coverage with the state,” explains Association Insurance Coordinator Cheryl Stillman.

Feds Begin "Means" Testing On Medicare Premiums
NOV 2006 - Incomes Above $80,000 Targeted - In what will undoubtedly come as a surprise to many members, the federal government will soon require retirees with higher incomes to pay a greater portion of their Medicare Part B premium, which, in most cases is deducted from their Social Security check.
