SEPTEMBER 2004
- To control increases in health insurance costs, many communities have
been participating in insurance pools. As witnessed by the growth of
the MIIA (Massachusetts Interlocal Insurance Association) Health
Insurance Trust, that number continues upwards.
"We've been reporting on the MIIA program for over 10 years," comments Insurance Coordinator Cheryl Stillman. "In fact, MIIA is embarking on its thirteenth year of operation and appears to be progressing along quite smoothly." According to MIIA officials, five towns have joined the program this year, along with a number of school and water districts. They are: Boylston, Medway, Newburyport, Salisbury and Wales. "As seen by this new group of towns, the (MIIA) program continues to draw interest through the Commonwealth," adds Stillman. "I understand that there are some 73 towns in MIIA, not to mention several authorities and districts." MIIA offers its participants a menu of several Blue Cross/Blue Shield insurance products. How much a retiree or survivor contributes to their premium is not governed by the pool but by the individual communities. |
