GIC Members Can Choose Not To Use S.S. Number PDF Print E-mail
JANUARY 2003 - When the FY'03 budget became law, there was a provision which received little fanfare, but may be of great interest to our members insured by the state's Group Insurance Commission (GIC). As part of the GIC's budget, the agency is required to issue an enrollee, if they request, a separate identification number instead of their Social Security number.

"Members have expressed concern over the use of Social Security numbers for identification with the GIC," says Insurance Coordinator Cheryl Stillman. "They're worried that the privacy of their medical records could be jeopardized or that their Social Security number, appearing on so many different documents, could be stolen."

With the new law, members, insured by the GIC, can chose not to use their Social Security number for identification. Unless you request the change, the GIC will continue to use your Social Security number.
