SEPTEMBER 2001
- County Treasurer McLellan Leads Fight - Along with 20 other towns in Plymouth County, Abington belongs to
what many consider the oldest health insurance pool in the state - the
Plymouth County Health Insurance Program. As it happens, that program
is headed up by a longtime Abington resident, namely Plymouth County
Treasurer John McLellan.
“Over the years, Treasurer McLellan, in his various capacities (including Plymouth County Retirement Board chairman) has fought with us to improve pension and insurance benefits,” reports Association Legislative Chairman Bill Hill. “Recently, the Treasurer led the fight in his own backyard - Abington.” Earlier this summer, McLellan, along with Town Treasurer Tom Connolly and other supporters, succeeded in having Abington agree to pay 50% of the insurance premium for survivors. According to McLellan, “We were unsuccessful a few years back, but we didn’t intend to give up and Tom (Connolly) made sure it would come up for a vote at the town meeting. Since the town’s finance committee had recommended against it, we had to give it our all and fortunately it was enough to win.” It’s expected that between 9 and 13 survivors will benefit from the premium savings. Currently Abington, as a member of the Plymouth County Insurance Program, offers to its survivors the following plans: Blue Cross/Blue Shield Network Blue, Harvard Pilgrim and Medicare supplements. |
