2007 JULY - Added Safeguards Under Coalition Bargaining - While there is a trend among cities and towns toward adopting mandatory Medicare, not all communities fit the same pattern when it comes to this issue. “We expect to see a marked increase in the number of communities accepting the local option law (Section 18, Chapter 32B) which mandates that local retirees, who are eligible for Medicare, enroll in that program,” according to Insurance Coordinator Cheryl Stillman.

MEDICARE SAVING STATE NEARLY $400 MILLION PDF Print E-mail
Retirees, enrolled in Medicare Part B, saved the state’s Group Insurance Commission (GIC) nearly $400 million in FY06.
With the average cost of non-Medicare retirees coming in at nearly four times higher than Medicare enrollees, the state’s mandatory-Medicare policy continues to be a windfall for the Commonwealth…but at what cost to retirees? Our answer: The state is cheating retirees by not paying a dime toward a major portion of their insurance costs, namely the Part B premium.
Nearly five years have now passed since then-Acting Governor Jane Swift eliminated the state’s Medicare Part B reimbursement with the stroke of her pen. As a result, members, insured under the state’s Group Insurance Commission (GIC), are forced to pay 100% of the Medicare Part B premium out of their own pockets.

UPDATE: MANDATORY MEDICARE PDF Print E-mail
JAN 2007 - Duxbury Awaits Weston Decision - Earlier this year, we reported that Duxbury officials postponed a vote on mandatory Medicare (Section 18) until this fall. If Section 18 is accepted by a town, then its retirees and survivors, who are Medicare eligible, will be forced to enroll in Parts A and B and a supplement plan provided by it.

Feds Begin "Means" Testing On Medicare Premiums PDF Print E-mail
NOV 2006 - Incomes Above $80,000 Targeted - In what will undoubtedly come as a surprise to many members, the federal government will soon require retirees with higher incomes to pay a greater portion of their Medicare Part B premium, which, in most cases is deducted from their Social Security check.
