Stow Votes To Pay One-Half Survivors' Health Insurance PDF Print E-mail
SEPTEMBER 2002 - Since the 1980s, there have been several attempts by Town of Stow retirees and employees to have the town pay 50% of the insurance premium for survivors, instead of nothing. Just last year, a petition calling for this, spearheaded by Association member and former Treasurer-Collector Eila Makey, was presented to the Stow selectmen but failed to make the town warrant because of time restraints.

This year was different, proving that the earlier struggles were not in vain. According to Makey, with the help of current Treasurer-Collector Carol Vogel and Town Administrator William Wrigley, the voters, at this year's town meeting, agreed unanimously to pay 50% of the health insurance for survivors.

Currently three surviving spouses carry health insurance through the town. "Many surviving spouses could not afford to remain in the town health plans because they had to pay 100% of the premium. This vote will make a tremendous difference to those (and all eligible) surviving spouses in the amount they pay for their health insurance," comments Makey.
