JANUARY 2002 -
Association member Paul Leger, who heads the Fitchburg Retired
Municipal Employees Association (FRMEA), has announced that beginning
January 2002, Fitchburg retirees will receive $10,000 group life
insurance coverage.Fitchburg's
employees and retirees had been insured for $5,000 coverage, but when
the employee's unions bargained for and won $10,000 coverage beginning
in January, Leger and his troops demanded that the city give retirees
the same benefit.
Mayor Mary Whitney, long a friend of the retirees, heard their cry and proceeded to go forward with a new life insurance contract, which included both retirees and employees. "Mary (Whitney) had been a strong supporter of the city's retirees," said Leger. "But we weren't taking any chances. Ray Godin, Jerry LeBlank, Joan Leger, Verne Roy and Leo Lorion (officers of FRMEA), along with other members, made sure that our voices were heard in City Hall. Mary did not win reelection this November and she will be missed." "The Fitchburg retirees are indeed a very vocal group," noted Association President Ralph White. "I recall back in 1987 when they pushed for and won $5,000 group life insurance. Fred Kalagher was their president at the time. Verne Roy, who was then a member of the Retirement Board, was also very active." Retirees will pay $4.18 monthly for the new coverage. They had been paying $2.40 for the $5,000 coverage. Boston Mutual, which has more municipal contracts than any other insurer, is the carrier. |
