2007 MAY - Vote By County Commissioners - Last year, Barnstable County Commissioners Mary LeClair, William Doherty and Lance Lambros voted to increase the amount of group life insurance from $7,500 to $10,000 for the county retirees and employees.

“With the cost of a funeral being increased over the years, we felt that our retirees should have sufficient coverage for a proper funeral,” said County Commissioner Mary LeClair, a retired county treasurer. “The $10,000 group insurance coverage will assure retirees that their spouse or next of kin will be not be burdened with a huge burial cost.”

“The retiree or employee pays 25% of the premium with the County contributing 75%” said County Insurance Administrator Michelle LaCasse. “The individual cost to a retiree or employee is $2.24 regardless of age.”

“At a January Cape meeting, Barnstable County retirees were raving about the $10,000 insurance and the low cost.  I’d be raving too if I had that coverage,” remarked Dick Connaughton, a state retiree who lives in Harwich. “Those county commissioners have just won a lot of votes.”
