Charles Rangel
January 11, 2007 - Social Security Dominant Issue - New York Democrat Charles Rangel will head the powerful House Committee on Ways and Means for the 110th Congress. Rangel, who has represented Harlem for over thirty-years, is known for his outspoken no nonsense style.

Of great significance to public retirees is the fact that fifteen of the Committee’s forty-one members represent non-Social Security states, which are also subject to the GPO/WEP laws. If an overhaul of the GPO/WEP laws were to take place, the Ways and Means Committee will play a central role.

Prominent amongst the Democratic committee members is Massachusetts Congressman Richard Neal, who has also served on the Committee’s Subcommittee on Social Security. Another key member of the Committee is Illinois Democrat Rahm Emanuel. The former top Clinton Administration aide is widely credited as an architect of the Democrat’s return to power in the past election.
