Keeping our members safe

MARCH 13, 2020: We hope that you and your family are safe and doing well while our nation fights the spread of the coronavirus.

In light of ongoing efforts to combat the spread of COVID-19 and out of an abundance of caution for the health of our members, we have decided to postpone our upcoming membership meetings in Somerville and Leominster. We will make decisions on whether or not to proceed with future meetings based on the latest information available.

Instead of holding in-person meetings, we are going to conduct a telephone Town Hall on Thursday, March 26th. Members will be able to call into the meeting, ask questions and listen to the latest information on your retirement – all from the comfort and safety of your own home! Please call our toll-free hotline after Friday, March 20th for full information.

Meanwhile, it is important for our members to take proper care to remain safe. While we do not wish to be alarmist, the threat from the COVID-19 virus is real – particularly for older retirees and anyone with existing health concerns. We recommend following the expert advice of public health and infectious disease professionals at the federal, state and local levels of government, including local boards of health. These are the best sources of factual information.

Also, the state Group Insurance Commission and Blue Cross Blue Shield have provided enrollees with information on your health insurance benefits.

Finally, we have taken the necessary steps over the past two weeks to allow the Mass Retirees office to operate remotely in the event it becomes necessary. We are closely monitoring all developments relative to your healthcare and retirement benefits, as they relate to the current crisis. Should you have any questions or need assistance, please do not hesitate to call on us.

We have every confidence in the ability of our public health system to meet these challenges and that these unprecedented events will come to pass. Meanwhile, please take the recommended steps to stay safe.
