New Legislative Session Kicks Off

Bill Filing Deadline January 18th

JANUARY 3, 2019: The Massachusetts 2019-2020 Legislative Session officially began Tuesday, with the inauguration of the state’s 160 State Representatives and 40 Senators. Governor Charlie Baker and Lt. Governor Karyn Polito begin their 2nd term in office today.

Bill Filing Deadline January 18th

JANUARY 3, 2019: The Massachusetts 2019-2020 Legislative Session officially began Tuesday, with the inauguration of the state’s 160 State Representatives and 40 Senators. Governor Charlie Baker and Lt. Governor Karyn Polito begin their 2nd term in office today.

On Wednesday, January 16th Treasurer Deb Goldberg and Attorney General Maura Healey will be sworn in for their respective 2nd terms in office. Secretary of State Bill Galvin and Auditor Suzanne Bump also begin their new terms on the 16th.

In the House, Robert Deleo (D-Winthrop) was elected to a sixth term as Speaker. On the Senate side, where the newly renovated historic Senate chamber was officially unveiled, Karen Spilka (D-Ashland) was elected to her first full-term as Senate President. Spilka was first elected Senate President in late July.

Deleo and Spilka are each anticipated to announce their respective leadership teams by early February, including new chairs for the powerful House and Senate Ways and Means Committees. 2019 is set to be the rare instance where both branches have new leaders of the key budget writing committees.

With the new session now officially underway, legislation can now be filed for the new session. Mass Retirees is in the process of filing our legislative proposals, which include a variety of bills tackling pension, healthcare and a host of issues that directly impact public retirees.

The bill filing deadline for this session is Friday, January 18th. A full report on the 2019-20 Legislative package will be contained in the March 2019 edition of The Voice.
